UK Visit from Felix (with VR+) & general Rigid gatherin

Postby nev » Fri Oct 17, 2014 10:32 pm

Steve Elkins (the AIR/Atos UK dealer) is trying to organise a visit from Felix, the AIR owner/designer from Germany.

He asked me to put out this note to gauge the level of interest. I've suggested we try and combine it with one of our impromptu Rigid wing get-togethers we have every now and then.

The new VR+ is reported to be getting around 1.5 to 2 points improved glide......considering my 10 year old VR started at around 20:1 and there have been further improvements over the years, to add yet another 1.5~2 points must make it an impressive glider.

The link below (page down a bit) has a picture shows the new VR+ and an original VR underneath; they even look quite different visually. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3434

The gathering is expected to be somewhere in the South.

Either email me (or reply on the forum) and I'll relay a level on interest back to Steve.

Cheers, Nev

I'm not in the market for a new glider but would be interested in the gathering and in seeing the VR+ nonetheless.

Guys

Steve Elkins (& AIR) are proposing the combined Rigid day and AIR visit for Sat 31st Jan & Sun 1st Feb.

The provisional plan is:

(1) Steve & AIR will liase during the 5 days before, checking the
forecasts, and broadcasting whether its a "go or no-go"
(2) Sven (AIR) will come over on the Friday (30th), and will base
at Steve's family in Wiltshire (Nr. Stonehenge)
(3) We'll converge on an appropriate site - tentative list is
generally within 50 miles for 50% directions, 100 miles for
the more difficult ones
(4) We can plan either a Pub or Curry house after, based on
numbers & location
(5) Will try and organise some simple nosh at the
site (Sausages, etc)

Gliders available will be

What AIR bring - defo VR+'s :)
Steve's VX (could be fun)
Steve wants to know if he should bring any FLY's?

Quite a few were interested following the quick email back in November.
Please PM me if you can come? (I've also emailed the likely candidates)

Cheers, Nev

AIR/Avian day is on - this Saturday, 21st February, At Westbury (Wilts)

Key points

AIR & Steve will be staying at Steve's family, about 20 miles east of Westbury, the planned site.
AIR will be bringing customer deliveries plus a demo VQ, unfortunately the VR+'s were not ready in time
Steve will bring another demo VQ, the VX (for dual flights) and some 'Fly's.
Most of you will know Westbury - if not, see http://avonhgpg.co.uk/sites/sitesmap.php and click on sites guide
Food/Drink - We are arranging the "K&R Cube" to be there for their usual delcious catering, e.g. bacon rolls, tea, coffe, etc. plus they usually have a
seated area which is useful.
I'll reconfirm on Friday evening, posting to this list, BOS list and FB Hangies group.
Suggest on-the-day we use "BOS Comp Shouts" Telegram list
Suggest we bring our multi-thousand lumen bike lights so we can max out into the sunset and still derig OK.

We can decide on the day the preference for apres flying; there's a very good curry house in Westbury (Tale of Spice 2), plus some good pubs nearby.

Did any of those "deliveries" include a VR+ ? or anything with the shinny new tail?

Cheers

No VR+'s but a shiny new VR with all the options including carbon keel, airbrakes, and a new system for joining the two halves delivered to a Bristol based UK pilot who has been flying HG for over 30 years and got distracted into PG for the last 10.

Short video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OXWJq_ ... e=youtu.be This shows his first takeoff and below is his reaction

"My shiny new VR seemed to go awfully well, I’d like to put it down to pilot skill, but deep down I know it wasn’t. The sink rate was awesome, and the handling is so precise. I was amazed at how well it went compared to other VR variants, that shiny tail seems to do quite a bit, it certainly damps down pitch to just lovely."

I'm sure he can be persuaded to provide some pictures and comments on the new features when the weather allows him to get out with the glider again

Interesting, look forward to seeing a few pictures. Would like to see the "new way" the the two wings are joined.

Is this VR intended to be trike mounted (because he ordered the air brakes)? Also, Does this new tail assembly split into sections or all one piece? Can't tell for sure with any of Sven's photos....

Cheers

Martin, Maybe others have not seen your post?
I have seen no pics of the 'new way' to join, and I regretably did not go to the AIR day, but this is what Nick C said to me:-
Its nothing that special. Its just gets rid of the overcentre mechanism by taking advantage of the the long lever which is a leading edge! I.e you lift the end of the leading edge, the problem is of course that you are then 15 feet away from the nose so you can't put the locking bolt in! So their mechanism is a single bar replacing the overcentre and at one end there is a spring loaded bolt that pops into position automatically when one leading edge is rotated round into position. Actually on the VRS it didn't work and it needed someone at the nose to just nudge the bolt to ensure it dropped into position! Still pretty much prototype I thought.

I saw it in use (but regrettably didn't take a picture), but pretty much as John describes.

You can imagine the simplicity of it by:
(1) taking both sides of your current over-centre off (and keep the pins that link to the big D-box stubs)
(2) Get a section of metal, drill holes to take the pins, and attach both ends to D-box stubs

I think it's a prototype and they are still working on it. The reason they've suddenly had to change how they tension the nose is the carbon keel does not split to do it the conventional way. If you rig your VR/vq without taking the rear of the stinger out you really need two people.
